G1EMM NOS and Net/Rom Connect

I have Version 1.4 of the G1EMM NOS code up and running on an old IBM PC
and expected that connects via the "Net/Rom" Node would result in a
response from the BBS.  I find instead that it sorta ends in Limbo with
no respons{ to the user and no indication (as far as I can find) by
the operator.  A friend, NJ8J, has version 1.6 up but has the same
result.  Am I missing a command somewhere{
