just in case: with the net-tools do 'make clobber' to make sure the
precompiled stuff is blown away (the Makefile is a bit broken when it
comes to configuring), and then run make, and configure for ax25 etc.
can't hurt, and it makes sure ifconfig gets built with AX25.

also, if it's a new kernel, maybe check that ax25 was really compiled
into the kernel: cat /proc/ax25 should say something

what does 'ifconfig sl0' say after that?

try

ifconfig sl0 44.4.16.1 hw ax25 K6LY-9 etc.

I don't use a serial TNC (use a PI card, nyaah nyaah!) but I tried this
on a pseudo tty and it works (Linux 1.1.76).
