Thanks to all who responded so quickly. Here's a summary of the solution
(so to speak).
The first reply was from D.J. N8QLB who noted that I was configuring the
route statement incorrectly. It should be:
route add -net 44.4.16.0 sl0
So it was the first thing I tried. Sure enough, now everything worked. I
can now telnet and ftp. BUT... when I typed "ifconfig" to see the
configuration, the it still showed:
Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 96-6C-98-B2-40-40-12-F8-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
..etc...
Strange...
Then Terry and John Paul sent me a note asking if I compiled the tools
correctly by specifying AX.25 in the configuration. I had in fact done so
(or so I thought :-). So I thought I had better try again. I recompiled
the tools, configured them for AX.25, then "make install." When I typed
"ifconfig" all was well! It's as if I compiled the tools incorrectly, but I
am sure I did it right the first time.
So I am wondering, since everything was newly installed, that I perhaps
installed the tools BEFORE I compiled the kernel with the AX.25 in it. I
suspect this might have been my problem. What order should things be done?
Configure and compile the kernel, then configure and compile the net-tools?
Again, thanks everyone, I'm up and running with my fifth Linux box with
AX.25. I have noticed that this set of AX.25 (version 026) is a bit quicker
on the transmit turn around time. I'm getting good responses and good
connectivity.
