Because Proxim etc. already make data radios for 2.4 GHz that are
better, cheaper and faster than hams could come up with, which would
take the fun out of it?
It's like those Hamtronics kits: I saw one that used discrete
transistors to drive/receive RS232 levels, when a pair of ICs would
have done the job, or a single MAX232. I guess they did that to
balance the two ICs they did use in the circuit.
