Agreed. But what he was really asking for, that I think would be useful too,
is a way to "telnet to a server that does nothing but pass data to/from a
serial port on the PC".
You can do this with things like cisco terminal servers by specifying unusual
TCP port numbers that are mapped to the hardware ports.
